VERTICAL SELF-BUILDING

→ The research into Dense Individuality or the possibilities of Vertical Self-Building I was running at krft was sponsored by the Stimuleringsfonds  Creatieve Industrie. In this research the history of self-building in the Netherlands is investigated and paired with international relevant examples of both Utopian and realised projects of vertical self-building and the use of modern production techniques such as CNC milling and 3D printing.

 

One of the aims was to come to new typologies and strategies for individuals to build in higher densities in our cities to counter suburban sprawl and the waste of space. To provide a historical frame of reference, interviews with global experts such as James Wines(SITE), N. John Habraken and Dick van Gameren were conducted.
