THE BIG U WINS REBUILD BY DESIGN COMPETITION!

→ As projectleader / architect-researcher at One Architecture I researched resiliency issues in relation to growth, density and (social) infrastructures for the Rebuild by Design competition in New York. We investigated ways to incorporate flood protection measures with solving mobility issues, providing affordable housing, empowering local communities, creating recreational green and cultural spaces and sustainable economic growth.

The entry for the Rebuild by Design competition by Team BIG I’ve been working on at One Architecture with Matthijs Bouw has been awarded $335M to be developed further:

“The Big U is a protective system around Manhattan, driven by the needs and concerns of its communities. Stretching from West 57th street south to The Battery and up to East 42th street, the Big U protects 10 continuous miles of low-lying geography that comprise an incredibly dense, vibrant, and vulnerable urban area. The proposed system not only shields the city against floods and stormwater; it provides social and environmental benefits to the community, and an improved public realm.”
